A great house on the sea, with a private cottage steps away

Four bedrooms in the great house, a private guest cottage, a historic veranda on Long Bay and a staff who look after all of it.

Overview

A family house, the way it was and is

The great house has stood on this point since 1880. Its classic veranda, louvred windows and doors open to the sea breeze, and its polished wooden floors lead out onto the veranda. It’s furnished as a home, not a hotel: books on the shelves, old maps and photographs on the walls (including one of Winston Churchill as an MP), knickknack cabinets, Jamaican wood carvings, antique and rattan furniture, and two dining tables: one inside and one out on the veranda.

Just steps from the house, the guest cottage has its own patio facing the sea, with Adirondack chairs shaded by a 10′ cantilevered umbrella. It’s only available to house guests and no one else.

Living spaces

Most of life here happens on the veranda

The great room opens on three sides, with a quiet writing nook lined with books in the corner facing the yard and an indoor dining table set with yellow canvas director’s chairs. But most days end up on the veranda, where a teak table seats up to 12 for nearly every meal, from breakfast to late dinners, between board games, cards and naps. The veranda steps are just steps from the beach, and a small side porch with a two-seater swing faces the tennis court, so the outdoors is always close and inviting.

The entertainment center has a Bluetooth stereo amplifier, a 40″ flat-screen TV with cable, a DVD player and ceiling-mounted speakers inside and out, with a subwoofer in the living room. Fiber-optic internet feeds a Wi-Fi mesh network throughout the house, the entertainment center also has a two-shelf safe, and there are board games from dominoes to chess.

Meals & staff

Three meals a day, from a restaurant-trained cook and housekeeper

Before you arrive, we’ll help you plan your meals. You cover the cost of the groceries; the cooking and service are part of your stay. Join the staff on the shopping run to the supermarkets, within walking distance, or go with them to the fishermen’s beach for lobster and fish. Then they cook and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most meals are eaten on the veranda overlooking Long Bay and Seven Mile Beach. On rainy days the indoor table seats six, and the game table can be set up in the living room for four more. We’ve got you covered.

Expect local fare such as ackee and saltfish, callaloo and festival, jerk chicken and whatever the fishermen bring in that morning. Try our signature dish, too: a take on eggs Benedict, with poached eggs on a bed of callaloo over fried bammy, finished with hollandaise. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and halal menus are all easy.

Good to know

Before you pack

Staying cool

The house is built for the breeze: louvred windows, classic Hunter ceiling fans in every room and a personal EvaPolar cooler on every bed. There’s no central air conditioning.

Water

A reverse-osmosis system filters the drinking water in the kitchen, and it’s tested regularly. The tap water is safe to drink from any faucet in the house, and chilled still and sparkling water is served in stoppered bottles any time of day.

Airport transfers and tours

We can arrange a driver to meet you at the airport and bring you straight into the yard. Just ask when you book. Drivers can also take you on tours of the South Coast, to Y.S. Falls and the Appleton Estate.

Traveling with children

We have a crib, a child’s daybed, a playpen, an inflatable mattress and kids’ snorkel gear and swim floats. A nanny or babysitter is available on request.

Watersports

Kayaks, boards and snorkel gear are free to use. We ask each guest to sign a simple waiver before heading out.

Getting around Negril

Seven Mile Beach is a ten-minute walk, and the West End’s cliffside restaurants are a short walk or drive. The staff know all the good spots, and you can hail a taxi from the front gate. The security guard will let you back in at any hour, even after a late night at one of Negril’s live-music venues.

“People first! The staff was incredible.”
